Abstract

Objective: This study was conducted to examine the relationship between musculoskeletal system symptoms, future anxiety, and self-compassion levels in university students.

Material and Methods: The research was designed in a cross-sectional and relational survey model. The study was conducted with 184 volunteer students studying at Harran University. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the Extended Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (GNMQ), the Future Anxiety Scale, and the Self-Compassion Scale. In addition to descriptive tests, t-tests and Spearman correlation analysis were used for statistical analysis.

Results: It was found that the regions where participants most frequently reported musculoskeletal pain were the neck (26.6%), lower back (25%), and ankles/feet (23.9%). Students without musculoskeletal symptoms were determined to have significantly higher scores in the "common humanity" (p=0.021) and "self-kindness" (p=0.048) sub-dimensions of self-compassion. Furthermore, significant moderate to high-level negative relationships were identified between future anxiety and self-compassion sub-dimensions in students who reported pain within the last 12 months.

Discussion and Conclusion: The prevalence of pain complaints in spine-related regions among university students may be associated with postural strain due to prolonged sitting and the use of technological devices. The finding that future anxiety levels were similar between groups with and without musculoskeletal symptoms suggests that this anxiety is influenced by multidimensional factors such as academic and economic uncertainties rather than physical symptoms alone. The inverse relationship between self-compassion and future anxiety in individuals experiencing pain indicates that this psychological resource may play a stress-regulating role. There are significant relationships between musculoskeletal symptoms, self-compassion, and future anxiety in university students. It is observed that physical and psychological well-being follow a more positive course, especially in individuals with high self-kindness and common humanity awareness. These findings reveal that psychological resilience factors should also be taken into account in the protection of musculoskeletal health.
